Hawaii Transportation Issues  Last updated: 05/12/2008 12:15:30 PM

Transportation can be a key factor in the value of Hawaii real estate, especially on Oahu and Honolulu. The more distant from employment centers and the longer the commute time, the less homes tend to cost. Land tends to be less expensive the further away it is from the urban core. The exception to this are resort properties.  The challenges that municipalities face is providing adequate transportation: adequate, well maintained roads as well as alternative means such as private and public mass transit. The City and County of Honolulu is currently debating the building of a $3.7-$6 billion rail system. This is controversial, not only for the cost and the small area of Oahu served, but because the experts and city officials admit it will not reduce congestion on our roadways. Follow the saga in the articles below.

The other recent controversy was over the Hawaii SuperFerry, the Inter-Island ferry that is now in operation again. Please review the many news articles that chronicle the challenges of this venture.

If you are seeking real estate in Hawaii we can help you with information on commute routes and times. The articles below include news articles relating to local Hawaii transportation activity that may have an impact on housing values.
