LUCKY TO LIVE
IN KANE`OHE
As you drive windward on Pali Highway, H-3, or Likelike Highway, the view of Kane`ohe and its bay takes your breath away. Recreational activities, sports activities and the welcoming community of Kane`ohe waits to embrace you.
I was born and raised in Kane`ohe and love everything it has to offer. The Ko`olau Mountains offer many activities from hiking, hunting and cultural learning. The windward side of Oahu is filled with lush vegetation and beautiful waterfalls. Hiking, picnicking, and fishing at Ho`omaluhia Botanical Gardens is truly an amazing adventure. Even a drive through this park will amaze you. ..
If you love the ocean, Kane`ohe Bay offers a wide range of activities from fishing to boating. Kane`ohe Bay is naturally protected by an outer reef that was the sunken ridge of the Ko`olau Mountain's crater. In the middle of Kane`ohe Bay is the Sand Bar. The Sand Bar stretches 3 miles long and is 1 mile wide. When the tides are low, the Sand Bar is exposed and it becomes a sandy beach. At the highest tides you can still walk along the bar. Recreational boaters utilize the Sand Bar as a place to relax and have a good time with family and friends.
If you love to fish then Kane`ohe Bay offers the opportunity to fish at the Pier, dive along the reefs, head out to the deep sea or the Sand Bar. "Yes", I did say the Sand Bar. My brother Brandon and I are deep sea fishermen, but enjoy FLY FISHING in Kane`ohe Bay at the Sand Bar.
Kane`ohe is a community that is very welcoming to anyone. Kane`ohe is a place that you would want to raise your children or even enjoy retirement. I grew up in Kane`ohe playing AYSO soccer, but Kane`ohe is also very competitive in other sports as well; some of which are football, baseball and basketball. If you have children there are many leagues that they will enjoy participating in and if you are a very involved parent like my mother was, then being the team mom or coach would fit right in.
Located in Kane`ohe is Windward Community College. The windward branch of the University of Hawai`i is quickly expanding their facilities and curriculum to address the increase in enrollment. There are several public schools located in the district such as He`eia Elementary, Kane`ohe Elementary, Kapunahala Elementary, Pu`ohala Elementary, King Intermediate and Castle High School. These schools are among the many that provide a future for our children.
As a young member of the Kane`ohe Lions Club I have a great opportunity to meet some of our residents who have shaped our wonderful community. These men and women still pass on the Aloha Spirit and devotion to serving their community as they continue to pass the torch to new members such as myself.
These are just a few reasons why I'm Lucky to Live in Kane`ohe. If you value family values, recreational activities and schools located nearby then Kane`ohe is the community for you. We welcome you to join our community and be apart of our family.
Keoki Leong, Legislative Chief of Staff, member: Kane`ohe Neighborhood Board, member: Kane`ohe Bay Regional Council, member: Kane`ohe Lions Club. Intermediate Head Football Coach Damien High School.
