Robert W. Morgan was a great 60-70’s
radio personality. His distinctive voice and great wit earned him a reputation
in the Los Angeles area. I loved listening to him.
In addition to being an outstanding radio
presence, Robert W. was a fisherman. In the mid 70’s he was on KFI and I’d hear
him mention bass fishing. He’d talk on the air about his then two year old
daughter, Susanna, playing with ‘jelly worms’ and keeping them in her purse. I
couldn’t resist it. I called him when he was on the air and we chatted about
bass fishing. I told him that I was a member of the West Valley Bassmasters, a
bass fishing club in the San Fernando Valley and I invited him to go fishing. To
my surprise, he accepted. He said he’d been waiting for someone to call and I
was the first.
We met at a Mexican restaurant in Encino.
I had my 14’ Glastron bass boat in tow and we proceeded to Lake Castaic. I can’t
remember if we caught anything but what we did do was agree to go fishing again
and we became friends. Robert W. even joined the West Valley Bassmasters and
fished with the club in a number of club tournaments. We fished together as a
team in a Lake Sherwood tournament and finished second or third! We’d pre-fished
the lake the week before and caught over 100 fish between us. What fun!
West Valley Bassmasters loved it when
Robert W. joined us for an occasional weekend fishout! He was a celebrity and a
very good fisherman and we truly enjoyed fishing with him. He was such a good
sport and I remember that he caught a really nice Largemouth Bass, around 4+
pounds, at a Lake Mojave tournament. He was thrilled and so were we.
We fished Lake Castaic, Lake Pyramid,
Lake Sherwood, Lake Piru, Lake San Antonio and Lake Casitas together. There were
probably other lakes we fished but my memory fails me. When we’d fished Lake
Casitas or Lake Cachuma we’d stop by the Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas on our
way home. The margaritas were great and we’d review what we did right and what
we did wrong and what we’d do different next time to catch more fish.
I last saw Robert W. when he came to San
Jose to take delivery of a new bass boat. It was 1980 and we had a great time.
Robert W. passed away on May 22, 1998. I miss him and I’m grateful for our
friendship and I’m grateful for the wonderful times that we shared. Thank you
Robert W. and God bless you!
